Well…we goofed. You may have noticed that your mobile client expired on June 30th. We had originally set that up a long time ago in an effort to control the versions that were out in the beta period. International Phone Numbers

We’ve been getting more and more users from outside the U.S. asking if YomoMedia works with international phone numbers. I have good news and bad news. The good news is that “yes”, international phone numbers will work. The bad news is that we don’t have the interface on the web application updated yet to reflect that. Bear with us…a few more days and that will be resolved.

Confirmation Email Glitches

Well…it seems that we had a few glitches in the past few days in processing the confirmation emails and sending them back out to web users. Our sincere apologies. In an effort to streamline the process, we have removed that step when registering for a new account on the web app. If you attach a phone to the account, however, you will receive a SMS with a 6 digit code that needs to be entered on the Settings>Download/Attached devices page.

Word to Spammers: Bite Me

Sometimes you get to serve your customers and at the same time serve humanity. As part of our security effort for user registration we are implementing reCaptcha from Carnegie Mellon University.

This is a commonly seen test for being a human, where you type in some text from a graphic that cannot be read by spam software looking for victims.It is not the only service available that does this, but what makes reCaptcha notable, aside from being a free service, is that each time it is used, it helps to digitize the text of books. As in archiving human knowledge. Now that’s cool.

YomoMedia Goes Into The Cloud

This week YomoMedia was succesfully installed and is up and running on Amazon’s Elastic Cloud Computing (EC2).We are testing it the rest of this week and if it continues to be as fast and stable as it appears now, we will point our DNS to this as our production environment. We’ll use either DynDNS or NoIP to manage that.We have been debating issues around performance and scalability. This will hopefully take care of immediate needs and allow us to adapt to changes.Kudos to our intrepid Chris K. for making this happen.

iPhone Interface

We have a second revision of the iPhone interface designed for YomoMedia. We reviewed the HTML clickable mockup and features today, and we’ll start hooking up live data to the screens later this week. The first rev of the iPhone will have basic functionality.

We won’t have sort by media type just yet. Instead we will have two links for viewing by Bundle (Home link), or listing all articles by date (Recent link). There will be a toggle for reading feeds as headlines only or river-of-news views. Until the iPhone SDK is opened up, we’ll wait on features like Email to a Friend, since we’d want to hook into the address book to do so.

Baking a tasty mobile content pie

A few weeks ago we all met in the Palo Alto offices of Alta Partners for a major brainstorming session on the website UI. Whiteboarding, brainstorming, building on others ideas and the occasional tussle over differing opinions makes for a lot of fun, not to mention a groundbreaking mobile content service.The alpha is on its way this week to a close coterie of friends, family and colleagues. Stay tuned as we push the mobile data industry onward and upward!

Who is YomoMedia?

This is the Yomo team minus one key member…Dimas Begunoff. It’s another typical Sunday morning where we can meet face to face and argue/debate/suggest key features as we prepare for the alpha release. It’s an eclectic group with great contributions coming from all.A lot of effort has gone into Yomo so far and it’s a long road ahead…but…we’re all excited about our progress and the huge potential of what we’re building.It’s exciting to see what can be accomplished in a relatively short period of time when you have people who are willing to put in the extra effort.

So…how does a distributed team who all have day jobs create something like Yomo? Twice-weekly early morning video conference calls (Adobe Connect) help keep us on track as well as great tools such as Basecamp (project management), ConceptShare (online design collaboration), Bugzilla (bug tracking) and of course IM and email. Regardless of the tools used, however, it really comes down to the people involved. It takes a lot of commitment and at times stubbornness to fight for what you believe in. Then again, it helps to know when to stop fighting and listen. Everyone has ideas…listen and you’ll hear some good ones.
