System Requirements

The YomoMedia client is designed to operate on mobile devices running the Windows Mobile operating system v5 and later. Certain devices with older versions of Windows Mobile 5 may need to have Microsoft's .NET Compact Framework installed. See below for more information.

Installing YomoMedia

The YomoMedia client may be downloaded by visting our Download Page (registration required). On that page, enter the phone number of the device on which to install the client. A text (SMS) message including a download link and a confirmation code will be sent immediately to the device. If you are using YomoMedia in Test Drive mode, you can still follow the instructions below to install the YomoMedia client.

Use the link to download the YomoMedia installer (CAB) file to the device. There will be a message asking to download the file named YomoMedia.cab. Indicate Yes by pressing the left softkey on the device. NOTE: If you have downloaded the YomoMedia installer before, there will be a Confirm message that a file with this name already exists, and it will be overwritten by the new file. Indicate Yes by pressing the left softkey to overwrite the file.

The installer should automatically run upon successful download. There will be a Confirm message asking to continue with installation. Indicate Yes by pressing the left softkey on the device. NOTE: If you have installed YomoMedia before, there will be an Alert message that a previous version of YomoMedia will be removed before the new one is installed. Indicate OK by pressing the left softkey to continue.

TIP: If you have a storage card installed on your device, it is highly recommended to install YomoMedia on that storage card. The content downloaded by YomoMedia will then be placed on the storage card, too.

If the YomoMedia installer does not automatically run, it can be manually installed. The typical location for downloads on Windows Mobile is in the My Documents folder. Using the File Manager application, navigate to this folder, select the YomoMedia.cab file and press the home button to launch the installer. Then proceed through the same installation steps as described above.

Attach a Device

The confirmation code sent with the SMS must be entered on the website to attach the mobile device to your account. Attaching a device to the account means that Bundles and feeds from your online account can be downloaded to the device. Go to the Download Page to enter the confirmation code.

Once you have attached a device to your account, a column of checkbox icons will appear next to all feed titles. Use the checkboxes to mark content for download. See the Web User Guide for more information on marking content for download.

NOTE: More than one device may be attached to an account. For every device that has been attached to your account on the YomoMedia.com website, a column of checkboxes will appear.

Installing .NET Compact Framework

The YomoMedia client requires Microsoft .NET Compact Framework to be pre-installed. In certain devices with Windows Mobile 5, the .NET CF may not be present. You may download the .NET Compact Framework software from Microsoft's website and install it with ActiveSync

Updating Content

Once YomoMedia has been successfully installed, you may download subscriptions over the air. NOTE: if you have not attached the device to your account online, updating subscriptions will push a default set of feeds to the device. To download any new bundles or feeds from your account, make sure to attach the device to your online account first. From the device home screen or the Start menu, click on the 'Yo' icon to launch the application. From the YomoMedia home screen, press the the right softkey to open the Menu, and select Update All. The amount of time it takes to download will depend on your connection speed and the quantity of subscriptions being transmitted.

NOTE: The text of subscription summaries are automatically downloaded by default, but media content is not. See the Download Settings and Downloading Media sections below for more details.

Navigating Content

From the YomoMedia home screen, there are four built-in sorting categories for viewing subscriptions:

  • All
  • Articles
  • Audio/Video Podcasts
  • Now Playing

Clicking 'All' will display an alphabetical listing of all feed subscriptions that have been marked for download in your account.
Clicking 'Articles' will display an alphabetical listing of all feed subscriptions that are text-only.
Clicking 'Audio/Video Podcasts' will display an alphabetical listing of all feed subscriptions that contain audio or video media.
Clicking 'Now Playing' will display an alphabetical listing of all feed subscriptions that have media already downloaded to the device and ready for playback.

Any bundles in your account are displayed beneath the built-in categories. Clicking any of the bundles will display an alphabetical listing of all feed subscriptions that are contained within.

Showing/Hiding Status Screen

During the update process, a status screen will appear along the bottom of the display indicating the progress of data downloads. To hide the status screen, press the right softkey to display the Menu, then scroll down to Hide Status and click the link. Unchecking the feed will remove the feed from your device at the next update (The feeds will remain in your account online).

Channel Download Settings

Channel download settings are available when viewing articles inside a particular feed. These settings apply only to the channel being viewed, and will take precedence over any global download settings. To view Channel Settings, press the right softkey to display the Menu, scroll down to Settings and click the link; a submenu will appear. Scroll to highlight Channel Settings and click the link. At the Channel Settings display, you may define the same settings as seen in the Download Settings menu.

Downloading Media

To manage the increased memory and bandwith required for media files (audio and video podcasts), YomoMedia allows more control over how these files are downloaded. From Download Settings or Channel Download Settings, you may define several properties for audio and video files. When the first option is selected, 'Only When I Choose,' a Download button will be displayed in any feed that has a media file enclosure. Clicking this button will download the media file on-demand. The status display will appear at the bottom of the screen indicating download speed and progress.

Once the media file is completely downloaded, the button will display Play. Clicking that button will launch the device media player. NOTE: media compatibility is dependent on the device. Check the documentation for your device to determine the type of media files it supports.

If the 'Automatically' option is selected, then new media files will be downloaded at each update. TIP: If large quantities of media files are regularly downloaded, the Update Start Time may be set for late in the evening when the device is not in use. With YomoMedia running, leave the device on and attached to a power supply or PC overnight, and the latest content will be ready for playback in the morning.

Saving Articles

When viewing individual articles, they may be saved to your account for later retrieval or publishing in a custom feed of your own. To save an article, press the right softkey to display the Menu, scroll down to Save Article and click the link. The next display will show any custom feeds that are available in your account. If there are no custom feeds available, the default location will be My Saved Articles.

Sending Articles

When viewing individual articles, they may be sent by email. To send an article, press the right softkey to display the Menu, scroll down to Send Article and click the link. At the next display an email address may be entered. Click Send to email the article to the recipient. The email will be addressed from you and will contain the article contents and a special YomoMedia formatted link. Clicking that link will open the article in YomoMedia.com. If the recipient is a registered user, they may add the article or feed to their own account with one click.

Help

An abbreviated version of the Help documentation is available from the device. From anywhere in the application, press the right soft key to display the Menu. Scroll down to YomoMedia and click the link: a submenu will appear. Scroll to Help and click the link to display the Help page.
